PERHAPS THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WEB DESIGN AND WEB DEVELOPMENT IS TO RELATE THE PROCESS TO SOMETHING MORE COMMON AND PERHAPS INTUITIVE: THERE ARE A LOT OF SIMILARITIES BETWEEN BUILDING A WEBSITE AND BUILDING A HOME. THERE IS OF COURSE THE OBVIOUS THAT THEY’RE BOTH “UNDER CONSTRUCTION”, AND “BUILT” ON A “SITE” AND HAVE A “HOME”. BUT THERE MAY BE MORE REASONS FOR CONSIDERING THE SIMILARITIES BEYOND JUST THESE SEMANTICS.

THE ARCHITECT

USUALLY AN ARCHITECT DESIGNS A HOME. A GOOD ARCHITECT WOULD MEET WITH THE HOMEOWNER, AND ASK STRATEGIC QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT FUNCTIONALITY THEY HOPE TO GAIN FROM THEIR HOME. WHAT ARE THEIR LIKES, DISLIKES, SPECIFIC NEEDS ETC. THE HOME IS THEN DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THAT SPECIFIC HOMEOWNER WHILE BALANCING STRUCTURAL BEST PRACTICES, BUILDING CODES, ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS AND CURRENT DESIGN TRENDS. THE RESULTS - OR PLANS - THEN GO TO "THE DESIGNER".

THIS IS VERY MUCH LIKE THE ROLE OF THE SKILLED INTERNET MARKETER.

THE DESIGNER

THE NEXT STEP IS TO HAND OVER PLANS TO THE INTERIOR DESIGNER TO DRESS UP THE HOME WITH COLOUR CHOICES, FLOORING AND FINISHES, WINDOW AND DOOR TREATMENTS. LOOK, FEEL, AND FLOW OF THE HOME. FUNCTIONALITY IS KEY, BUT AESTHETICS ARE WHAT PEOPLE NOTICE FIRST. IT IS NOW TIME TO GIVE THE HOME SOME “CURB-APPEAL”. NOTICE, AESTHETIC APPEAL IS ADDED TO THE STRUCTURAL AND PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE HOME, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. NOW THE PROJECT IS READY TO GO TO THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR.

THIS IS VERY MUCH LIKE THE ROLE OF THE SKILLED WEB DESIGNER.

THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR

THE FINAL PHASE IN BUILDING A HOME IS TO HAND THE PROJECT OVER TO THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR WHO WILL OVERSEE THE ACTUAL BUILDING OF THE HOME ACCORDING TO THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE ARCHITECT, AND THE FINISHING OF THE INTERIOR DESIGNER. THE SKILLED GENERAL CONTRACTOR HAS IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF MULTIPLE AREAS OF CONSTRUCTION, AND THE ABILITY TO CO-ORDINATE AND IMPLEMENT DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS TO CRAFT THE COMPLETE HOME AS IMAGINED BY THE ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER.

If it’s on the web, he probably has a pie graph about it. Ainsley is Muller Consulting’s international man of numbers and correlated marketing data; sort of like James Bond, but with fewer guns and more statistics. He feeds clients the secrets of the internet by gathering all of the intel available and translating it into words everyone can understand.  

Ainsley grew up in South Africa, and graduated with a Diploma in Business Administration in 1998. In 1999 he got his first taste for working on the web when he worked as a web-development assistant for a small design agency. When he moved to Canada in late 1999 he decided to pursue his passion (and fuel his addiction) for coffee. Ainsley quickly built a reputation for consistently elevating organizations into top revenue-generating entities. He helped pioneer and fuel the rapid growth of the Fair Trade coffee industry in North America between 2000 and 2007 - building a new category in a competitive industry through branding and market positioning.  

Since 2007 Ainsley has specialized in online marketing and in that time has helped hundreds of businesses to succeed online and off. Ainsley has logged tens of thousands of hours rooting out and shoring up brand positions online; shamelessly championing his client’s brands, protecting their online reputation, and being a true brand ambassador for the clients he represents. Ainsley lives in Victoria BC with his wife and two children. But probably still drinks too much coffee.
